Festive Fun in Glasgow

No city celebrates the run-up to Christmas like Glasgow.  It has a full calendar of events to keep you entertained from the 26th November, right through to 2012.

St Andrews Day

On Saturday the 26th November, George Square will turn into a celebration of all things Scottish to honour St Andrews Day with Scottish food, drink and music. A St Andrews Day concert will take place on Wednesday the 30th November, taking place from 4pm until 10pm..

Shopping

Glasgow boasts the UK’s largest retail contingency outside London; you are guaranteed to find the perfect Christmas gifts for all your loved ones here.  From Versace to Topshop, John Lewis to Debenhams, and with Glasgow’s very own Hamleys store, you won’t be disappointed.  Glasgow boasts over 1500 shops with extended opening hours at this busy time of year.

Glasgow on Ice

Glasgow’s outdoor ice rink will open on the 26th November for over 5 weeks.  Wrap up warm and go skating to get into the Christmas spirit.  Two curling classes will also be scheduled in November and December.

Free film nights

Throughout December a Christmas film will be shown between 6pm and 8pm underneath the covered stage in George Square.  Films include classics such as White Christmas, Scrooge and Home Alone.

Santa Dash

On 10th December, you can enter a 5K Santa Dash for your chosen charity.  Taking place on  11th December 2011, all entrants put on their Santa suits and run the streets of Glasgow, starting and ending at George Square.  Even if you don’t take part, this is a sight not to be missed!

Sleeping Beauty

For two very different takes on this classic story, Glasgow presents a Pantomime in the King’s Theatre (Fri 2nd Dec – Sun 8th Jan) and Ballet at the Theatre Royal (Sat 17th Dec – Sat 31st Dec). Tickets for both performances, can be booked here. (http://www.atgtickets.com/).

Hogmanay in Glasgow

A family friendly programme of activities will take place on the 31st December from 12 noon until 10pm in George Square.  For those looking to party into 2012, tickets are available for Merchant Square in Merchant City including eight venues, four bands and one dance floor!  Bring in the bells and welcome 2012 with the sounds of a live piper.
