The Tall Ships are coming!

Throughout July 2011, Kirkwall celebrates 200 years of being the main port-of-entry for Orkney. One of the highlights will without doubt be the visiting Tall Ships from the 2011 Tall Ships Race!

These celebrations kick off on Friday 15 July, with the first tall ships expected to arrive in Kirkwall on the eve. From then on it’s a packed programme of activities. These include a sailing challenge from Kirkwall to Stromness, the first berthing together since 1999 of Norwegian giants Statsraad Lemkuhl, Sorlandet and Christian Radich -and the expected arrival on July 18 of Mir -the biggest sail training ship in the world!

A full downloadable program, as well as detailed information about tickets and transport on the island, is available from the Orkney Council website. You can visit the Orkney Harbours website for the latest list of visiting ships!
